It supposedly makes the heart grow fonder, so did you miss me?

I could list off multiple excuses (all of which somewhat related to school) and dwell in the past but what's the point when I'm here now and have far more exciting things to discuss and document. With year 12 over I feel refreshed and free of obligation allowing room for glimmers of my creative side to re-roar their fruitful heads. And you know what that means for you? More posting!

And don't you worry, I didn't completely isolate myself in the depths of business books and paint brushes all year, I still managed to keep up with all the ins and outs of the industry (and boy have there been a influx of them, most recent being my boy at Balenciaga Nicolas, who called it quits after 15 years as creative director of the french brand and lets not yet go into the touchy subject of his successor.) If you've kept up with my other ramblings and visual eye candy in the way of my tumblr, twitter and freshly hatched instagram (yes, I finally surrendered and made the switch from BB to iPhone) then you may have gotten a little insight into the latest goings on in my life, and the fact that I am indeed alive and posting, I just neglected this baby for the long cold winter.

I won't lie, it's been daunting trying to get into the blogging groove again, so I'm starting off small to get the ball rolling and since the end of the year is near it can mean only one thing, holiday season. So here is my ($$dream$$) go to outfit for any celebratory party i'd have the honor to attend. Equal parts festive, fashion forward and fun.

But then what 17 year old wouldn't be?
I'm a high school student, I don't work and I sure as hell don't have the money to fund designer goods the way some other bloggers do.
But that doesn't stop me from dreaming.

I often sit on net-a-porter filling up a shopping bag with hundreds of items before pressing checkout and laughing at home many centuries it would take to be able to afford them is a favourite past time. It's all a part of the thrill of dreaming this imaginary wardrobe that I one day hope to have.

The New Guard, an online and boutique store in Adelaide makes that fantasy closer (a few cms in my case) to a reality.
With the likes of Maison Martin Margiela, Hakaan, Acne, Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant and my personal favourite 3.1 Phillip Lim.
Not only that but they support incredible Australian designers such as my current obsession Dion Lee, Ellery, Arnsdorf and Carly Hunter.

And currently they are stocking Dries Van Noten. The initial excitement upon reading this was soon and sadly flattened with 'oh God I'm going to look and feel depressed over not being able to own it'. Or in other words, my daily ritual after reading my emails in the morning. hmm sucks to be average, doesn't it. I really must get onto that job... but back to my pre-melancholy mentioning.

Now if you've read my blog since the beginning (and really it hasn't been that long) you'd remember me posting a bit about the Dries Spring Summer 2012 collection, and now I could actually get my hands on it!
Yes, the lovely team at The New Guard are stocking all those glorious items I continuously drool over.
They offer something many other shops in Adelaide are lacking and that's international high end fashion and style. And I give them a BIG applaud for that. There isn't a time I click onto their site and don't load up the cart with designer delights. So today was no different.

These quality and beautiful pieces are worth forking out the big bucks to own, especially if you choose right you could have yourself a classic item to treasure. Here are just a few of my picks from their latest offerings.
(Trust me just narrowing this down was hard)
Happy Easter!
I hope it's a relaxing and enjoyable time for you all.
I can tell you mine will be because I am finally on holidays! This also means I'll be able to get back to regular posting.
I've set myself the goal to post at least once per day throughout this two week break!
So I'll start off light with this opportunity to wish you all a nice long weekend and it's also an excuse to post this ADORABLE picture of a bunny wearing Louis Vuitton ears. Trust me this was one of many editorials featuring the infamous bunny ears from the Fall 2009 collection but I didn't want to detract from the cuteness of this fluffy black furball. I'd <strike>jump </strike>hop at the chance to still believe in this lil fella if it were designer delights he was bearing instead of calorific chocolates.

Anyway, how festive & appropriate!
How are you spending your break?
I'm a terrible blogger,
There, I admitted it.
But trust me, things will pick up! I hoping to fully get back into the swing of things over the next week or two.
So stay tuned, this school work will pass and I will return.
Plus I might start documenting some research I've been doing!

In the meantime visit my tumblr for daily inspiration and photos to make you swoon!
I put a lot of effort into that thing! Finding all the photos and posting them myself plus trying to keep some sort of aesthetic order.

Here's a peak at some of my favourites from March.
So hopefully my vintage snaps of Moss and other pretty delights will make up for my absence!
(details of the photos can be found on their posts on my tumblr)

As I'm sure the fashion concious readers would be aware, yesterday's collection was the last for Raf Simons, creative director of the label since spring 2005.
The designer emotionally farewelled his audience for the last time and was presented with a well earned standing ovation (Anyone watching the livestream would have noticed Wintour was the first to jump up applauding in approval) and after exiting the runway he was summoned to return for one last tear filled curtain call.

The designer stayed true to has 'king of minimalism' title with a collection filled with sugar sweet pastels, cherry reds and details of neon seen lining soles of the shoes or a clutch.
The colours were mimicked the contemporary floral arrangements shielded behind Lucite boxes created by friend Mark Colle.

The shapes were structurally exaggerated and screamed 1950's Haute Couture.
Everything was seen to with absolute perfection, from the models casting, to their hair and refreshing make-up, the music, the set and of course the design.
Also, I can see those shoes on the soles of every fashion editor and sartorial star next season, they may have been my favourite part!
Now I could go and post every photo taken from show and trust me I'm tempted but I'll just give you a taste because I'm sure this won't be the last you'll see of them.

My only criticism would be that it looked more like spring that it did winter,
but really I'm not complaining because I am so sick of seeing somber velvet filled shows this season.

Where ever Raf goes, I will follow.
And a designer with such talent will not go to waste. I know there will be much more to come from the Belgium born designer.
I mean, way to take an otherwise 'fisherman-esque' accessory and turn it into something chic by adding some sheer netting like wrap around the hat!
I always love the combination of style opposites in a look whether it be grunge and glam or something strong mixed with soft so this idea is right up my alley, and would be easy to D-I-Y too!
I'm hoping Milan and Paris will wow me with something new and exciting.

I'll keep this relatively short
but here are some trends I'm confident will be migrating to your closet from Fall/Winter 2012 so far:

Bulky matte leather - Whether it be pant, coat or dress form

Sheeny and Shiny Metallics - Anything with a iridescent tone and in pretty much any colour

Fur - It's a given, but it has been everywhere, especially in the form of accessories and on shoulders/sleeves

Velvet - unfortunately (I'm REALLY not a fan) but it's seen on the daily

Embellishments - of any kind, clusters, symmetrical, patterned you name it!

Florals - Not only are they for spring! My favourites were seen on shoes and bags like at Christopher Kane or Erdem. Floral pants will become a must-have item!

Rich moody colours - wine/burgundy, deep purples, moss green and royal blues

Brocade - Love this! and Jacquard too

Menswear - As always for winter, but wearing a suit jacket or slacks has never looked so good!

Printed - photo and highly realistic prints, think Mary Katrantzou or Peter Pilotto

Military - thank God for this but I think it'll make a come back! Always loved this look

All white - snow queen ice princess anyone? I think yes, all white for winter!

Boots - ankle, knee length, leather, printed!

And I'll say it again but LEATHER AND FUR, seriously I'll be surprised if there are any animals left after this season! (please go faux if possible)

And lastly I'd like a little congratulations to DION LEE,

I featured this talented young designer earlier on this blog and he had his first show in LONDON FASHION WEEK a few days ago! Well done, it was a success, he even had Kanye West design the shoes for the collection and if that isn't instant A-list approval I don't know what is!

The collection was inspired by the idea of breathing and "Specifically...inspiration from lungs, and the way air moves through things, along with how the body responds to air." Beautifully breathable fabrics with vein-like structure and the lightest organza that sheerly shielded the skin. Everything had transparent and reflective qualities and created a beautifully filmy yet tailored presentation.

Another quickie!
No words for this collection other than I would happily step outside wearing every. single. piece
They truly have mastered ready to wear.
Every editor, blogger, street style star and socialite will have a frenzy over this.
And I would too if I had the money. I could live off a closet stocked only of design duo Jack and Lazaro's clothes and I would be a very happy(and stylish) lady.
The cuts, the fits, the colours and the cool girl appeal are all there!

The Mulleavy sisters behind the ethereal and romantic brand drew inspiration from the birth of Australia. Victorian influences were clear along with outback hues and dusty cheekbones. It was our countries rugged and barren terrain that was depicted.
But it was one idea that was most clearly Australian and that was the use of Aboriginal dot painting inspired materials.

(Collage by me, photos from stylebistro. Background artwork "Wunkartu" by Helicopter Joe Tjungurrayi)

They did okay considering the pair haven't actually visited Australia before, no?
I love anything with iridescence, especially in these tones. I loved it last season at Sportmax especially and I love it here. Prabal had a nice continuation from his SS’12 line here but what I’m most excited for now is what he does next. This was almost safe in the way that it was kind of expected. He has a strong fan following now with retailers, editors and the likes so I think his next step is important in deciding the longevity of his career.

Anyway, that's my input on one of my favourite elements at Prabal's show, Decoded: ByKate
(Again, sorry for the brief posts but I'm stresssed with work and can't formulate a post to the standard I prefer (frustratingly I'm a perfectionist) so it's this or nothing)
Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05335907785656298483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1132627661810514126.post-71968772110888865062012-02-11T12:04:00.000+10:302012-02-11T12:04:20.842+10:30My Crystal Ball Says....Leather Pants will be a big trend this FW 2012

So I'm just popping in with a short post! But yes, NYFW has begun! Cue overwhelmed feelings of the fashion overload to come in the next month!

I feel constantly stressed with all the photos and information there is to immerse myself in over the 4 fashion weeks, but I love it. Hopefully one day I'll be able to have these emotions and actually be a part of all the face paced marathon that is Fashion Week.

A girl can dream!

So anyway, Throughout the month I'll be giving you some of my favourite looks, collections, designers, models, behind the scenes snaps and possibly even some street style of the biannual extravaganza!

So here is one prediction that I think I've already cottoned on to from the past couple of days,

Leather, in all shapes and forms!

Yes a little cliché for winter but this season it shows new fits, slouchy and loosely tailored leather for pants has been the look I've gravitated towards.

And this is just the beginning!

Also, has anyone noticed the abundance of rounded shoulders!??

Did I not tell you this would be big?

p.s something terrible happened this week,
I got my laptop back after being serviced and everything was wiped,
that's right, all 20,000+ inspirational photos and documents that I've collected over the years,
I was devastated... as tragic & embarrassing as it may sound.
Maybe it's all in anticipation of the upcoming London Olympics? The fact that it mixes comfort and modern style? Or maybe they've just realized that it'll be more cost effective to mix gym clothes with day wear. Two for the price of one, who doesn't love that?
Well whatever it is, it works.

Now I'm sure your all want to avoid looking as though you just finished a half-marathon or scored a home run. So in order to make this trend seem less scary I'll give you a few tips that'll draw the line between work out and wear out.

(L to R: Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, Akris, Isabel Marant, Akris, Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, Versus, Lacoste, pictures from style.com and edited by me)

Now here are my ideas and tips for looks that might inspire you to give this trend a shot.

(1-Jason Wu pullover, 2-Aubin & Wills tshirt, 3-3.1 Phillip Lim jacket, 4-Pierre Hardy clutch, 5-Karen Walker sunglasses, 6-Alexander Wang bag, 7-3.1 Phillip Lim shorts, 8-Alexander Wang dress, 9-Rag & Bone skirt, 10-Roksanda top, 11-Jason Wu pants, 12-Henry Holland for Le Specs sunglasses, 13-Jil Sander bag, 14-Christopher Kane shoes, 15-Gilmore shoes, 16-VPL bra, 17-VPL bra, 18-Michael Kors bodysuit, 19-Michael Kors bangle, 20-Michael Kors watch, 21-3.1 Phillip Lim vest)

If your not afraid to make a statement with punches of neon colour try wearing the trend with key items like above. Scuba swimwear, visible zips, strong panelling and modern cuts prove the trend is all about execution. Sports bras like ones from VPL worn under tanks or jackets are a great trend staple. Look out for fabrics such as mesh and neoprene that add to the sporty aesthetic.
Stream line the look, think like an olympic swimmer!

1- Michael Kors shoes, 2-Illesteva sunglasses, 3-Lisa Marie Fernandez bathers, 4-Versus clutch, 5-Adam pants, 6-Jonathan Saunders dress, 7-Versus clutch, 8-Versus shoes, 9-Casio watch, 10-Pierre Hardy backpack, 11-Proenza Schouler top, 12-Paul&Joe jacket)

For those a bit shy or new to the trend, try pastels or toned down brights like purple of blue. The key is simplicity so clean lines and a mixture of structured and relaxed fits make the look work. Items with striped piping immediately add a sporting touch and add a minimal detail.
Sports wear Decoded: By Kate
Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05335907785656298483noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1132627661810514126.post-18105145441698598182012-01-28T12:33:00.002+10:302012-01-28T15:46:05.062+10:30Haute HopesOne thing I'm sick and tired of reading are reviews that continue to praise designers no matter what the outcome of their collection. Good or catastrophically bad there is always a lingering tone of sweetness and admiration for that label. And for what, the sake of pleasing them and consolidating their front row invitation to the next show? I want to read something real, honest and sometimes brutal.

After viewing the shows from Paris Couture week F/W 2012-2013 I was notably underwhelmed. I was uninspired. There was nothing new, nothing that shocked me or had me in a hypnotized faze.

In credit to the designers and creative teams behind these 'spectaculars' I have full respect for their craft and the pure time and dedication put in place to create such wondrous shows. I also understand that my opinion has it's limitations and could be completely altered if I were to have seen the collections in the flesh, the way these editors and reviewers do. Experiencing the full ambiance and atmosphere of the collections as well as closely eyeing the details, cuts and colours can be the deciding factor of ones opinion. Therefore I am purely speaking as someone who has ogled over the collections on websites such as style.com and NowFashion eagerly awaiting more footage and HQ detail or backstage images (start blogging or tumblring and you'll know what I mean).

So with this knowledge and respect in mind, I was still left feeling flat, unsatisfied and craving more. It seems the smaller design houses were outshining the renowned ateliers.

Now I wouldn't front this debate without evidence. Case in point, Chanel. Before I go on I do want to stress that I have the up most respect for Karl and other geniuses mentioned, I do, but the creativity or lack there of this season was playing on my mind. I also realize I may be executed for my opinion, which I'm ready to fight and take full responsibility for.

Upon embarking the private jet experience that was Karl's runway show (or metaphorically speaking since this only meant switching on the computer screen and logging onto a live photo stream) I was yet again excited to see what extravaganza the Kaiser had conjured up again. Disappointment was my next unfortunate feeling as the girls started flying out the cabin crew doors (i.e. backstage.)
I felt like I was watching ready to wear! Where was the magic, the collection melted into variations of the shade of blue with troll doll like hair was a step back into the 80's, one I'm sure most would like to forget. It left me feeling as though Karl was trapped in time. The shapes and designs were nothing new, the same extreme drop waists with hidden pockets and open boat neck collars mimicked an androgynous look borrowed from the boys.

Comparisons/similarities from recent Chanel shows: (in comparison to the first image, in blue, from Fall 2012-13 Couture)

(delving into the archives i was overwhelmed with photos that I could use so here is just a small observation of one idea)

(Row 1, Chanel Couture 2012-13, Chanel Spring/Summer 2012 RTW. Row 2, S/S 12, Fall 2011, S/S 12. Row 3, Spring 2011 RTW, Fall 2010, Spring 08 Couture, Spring 2010 RTW)

Even without the incredibly talented Francois Lesage(1929-2011) , the embroidery and attention to detail was still present and alive. I just wish Karl would stick to the label at hand, Chanel, instead of side tracking into collaborations and distractions so that he can purely focus on creating new and exciting ideas for the task at hand. All that energy and multitasking directed into one project could result in a new vision and update for the label without veering to far away from the true Coco legacy.

I'd love to hear your opinions. I'm just stating my opinion, one I feel is often missed or sugar coated with flattery. I'm just wishing for something new next time.
Now I could go on about the rightfully adored labels that us Australians can take ownership of, but that'd make quite a lengthy post. So instead, Iv'e decided to hone in on a few true gems(or Opals since we're in the mood.)

Now narrowing this list down was no easy task! And it kills me because I know Iv'e missed a few but Iv'e decided to create a few honorable mentions. And trust me, you'll be swooning!

I'm going to make this brief and to the point because before we know it a bombardment of fall winter 2012-2013 looks will be upon us before we even get the chance to rummage out our precious credit cards in the hopes of grabbing some spring summer beauties. And what does that result in? Confusion! But I'll go into the runway season schedules with you some other time, that's a whole post in itself!
So here it is, a style break down brought to you by the letter S! Here's what you'll be wearing all summer long (and possibly into the colder months too!)

Shape: The peplum. Catwalks were filled with these ruffle like hems seen on dresses, skirts, tops and pants, you name it! (L to R: Dries Van Noten, Vera Wang and Camilla and Marc top)

Styles: Listed are a few styles that stood out this season as clear trends to look out for.

Shade: Pastels were huge on the catwalks and this shade of sweet pale pink made many appearances. I can see a lot of you reliving the glory days in this hue. (L to R: Givenchy, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Vera Wang, Antonio Berardi and Richard Nicoll)

Staple: The shirt will forever be the ultimate staple. For spring summer sheer or silky fabrics are the perfect choice and will be seemingly popular. Equipment are the cult go to brand for shirts and pictured is one I think we can all take a fancy too.

Shoes: The metal capped toe was seen in shows such as Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Thakoon (all pictured) and is a cool update to any classic shoe. Not only were capped toes making a splash but the return of futuristic metallic shoes graced many catwalks along with equally shiny accessories.

So theres a few trends your likely to be heading for!
And with good reason!

Designers looked into the past spring summer 2012 season and the result was the revival of 1950's curved shoulders. A trend that was made popular by the likes of Dior and Balenciaga at the time was reborn for 2012 being seen in a large handful of shows.

Seen applied mostly to coats this shape is boxy and structured and mimics 50's couture silhouettes. Dior revolutionized fashion with his "New Look" in the late 40's which saw rounder shapes with modest hem lines and cinched in waists. The look, which at first was given the 'cold shoulder', saw a feminine and tailored silhouette which is something this spring summer season won't be short of.

Don't feel yourself warming to the trend yet? Don't worry, I have a feeling you'll come around. (had to be done?)

Designers embraced technology in a nod to digital and photographic prints this spring summer 2012 season seen in all forms from bathing suits to bags.

Peter Pilotto (1 & 2) was inspired from a recent trip that saw him experience the flora and fauna of islands in Indonesia. An exotic array of vibrant colours were the result of digitally manipulated images of waves and nature from the jungle.

One designer renowned for her use of realistic prints is Mary Katrantzou and she didn't fail to deliver once again with a collection swimming in aquatic images in her take on nature vs. nurture. There were tropical fish, tin cans and an abundance of flowers which also blanketed the runway with a rainbow of vibrant carnations.

Photographer James Reeve's inspired Dries Van Noten this season with his nighttime city lightscape images that were featured on everything from clutches to t shirts. The photos, now on exhibition, leave the physical forms of landscapes in the darkness while the man made lighting shines through.

Emanuel Ungaro took aerial images taken by NASA as their inspiration for abstract and vivid prints. An example of yet another designer influenced by the natural world and graphics to create a line of clean shapes and tailored cuts that give room for the prints to dominate. When you forget the troubles this brand has and is facing and focus on the NASA's incredible imagery there's a nice aesthetic and skillful technique to be seen.

Dries Van Noten's invitation for their Summer 2012 collection cleverly resembled a photographic slide featuring one of Reeve's images when held to the light.

More on James Reeve's exhibition with Dries Van Noten can be found here.
